Autumn Beginnings...

This month we’ve headed into the season of Autumn and after the Summer break we’ve welcomed back some of our pre-school children and welcomed some new faces to the First Steps Family. Our busy pre-school rooms Big Steps and Little Steps have kicked of the start of the new academic year with lots of fun and stimulating learning opportunities. This month the children have helped staff to pick some of their favourite stories to focus on, including ‘We’re going on a bear hunt!’ and ‘The Gruffalo’.   The staff have used their wealth of knowledge and creativity to set up different story sets, messy and craft activities and imaginative role play experiences to continue to develop the children’s love of stories and reading. We still have some spaces left in our excellent preschool rooms so please don’t hesitate to get in contact and book yourself a tour to see all of the fun we get up to!

Over with the younger children in the nursery the babies and the toddlers have been expressing their own interests in music and movement. Children learn to move their bodies with more control so they can match their movements to the sounds and music they hear. Using our ‘music boxes’ which have simple props such as, ribbons and scarves, can help children to join in and stimulate different movements to the sounds they hear. As the children get older in our toddler room we have seen them joining in with movements that follow simple rhythm and word patterns from songs they know.. Baby Shark being a particular favourite!

Here at First Steps we pride ourselves on continued professional development (CPD) and this month has been no different. All of the staff have completed a ‘Children’s mental health’ course which helps us a team to understand and be able to introduce more activities to promote good mental health and well being in children. The EYFS says, ‘CPD ensures that you maintain and enhance the knowledge and skills you need to deliver the best possible care for each individual child’. Each month a different course is picked to enable us to continue widening our own knowledge about the child care sector.

Lastly this month we had parents evening and it was great to see so many of you there! We had some brilliant feedback about the staff and as always the staff were thrilled to share the children’s achievements and let you all know about what they get up to at First Steps. Parents Evening is a great opportunity for us all to work together as partners to ensure the children are set up for the best possible start in life and we cannot wait to continue this over the next year!
